self-portrait
This work is a recreation of one of the many self portraits of Robert Mapplethorpe. By making this work I wanted to explore a new part of myself, something I felt was always there. Being queer and looking masculine has two sides: when I am outside and alone at night I luckily have never experienced people screaming hate slurs or having to deal with weird looks, but the contrary is that I got said to me: ‘I’m glad your not one of them extra ones’, ‘not one of the ladylike queers’. For me this work is about accepting this part of myself but also a way to show that masculine guys sometimes want to queen out too!!
