Storm van Bakel (2001) is a second-year photography student at the Willem de Kooning Academy. He is currently working exclusively as an analogue photographer. Working with this medium allows him to slow down, carefully consider framing and notice details others might overlook. Storm’s work explores and documents intimate and personal subjects such as family dynamics and queer identity. Through his work, Storm aims to shed light on subjects that are not often openly discussed, but that he believes should be.
Storm is driven by a desire to create awareness and visibility for queerness. He feels that this subject has not yet reached the level of understanding and representation it deserves within society. Growing up as a queer child, Storm missed having something to relate to, something that reflected and affirmed their identity and community. Through his work, he hopes to provide that sense of visibility and connection for others within the queer community.
